Sandbanks Provincial Park is one of the best and most popular attractions here in PEC. With over 700,00 visitors each year, it’s famous for its impressive dunes and is considered to be one of the best beaches in Ontario.

It’s a fantastic place for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the unique dunes.

To maximize your experience, arrive early, especially during the peak summer season, to secure a good spot on the beach and enjoy the serene beauty before the crowds arrive.

A Local Tip: There’s more to Sandbanks Outlet than meets the Eye; the Richardson Side is also worth exploring. It’s less busy, and the beach stretches to Wellington.

Also, Picnic tables are limited, so bring a sun tent, towels, and flip-flops because the sand gets scorching hot in the middle of summer.

2. Discover Lake on the Mountain

Growing up at Lake on the Mountain, I can tell you it offers a truly unique geological phenomenon and a spectacular scenic viewpoint overlooking the Bay of Quinte.

Visitors call it the mysteriously elevated lake, because it’s perched high above the surrounding landscape. Looking down, you can see the Glenora Ferry going back and forth. It’s a must-see in PEC.

It’s a perfect “County Picnic” stop to stretch your legs and take in some breathtaking natural beauty on your way to Picton or other parts of The County.

Jackson Falls and Cape Vesey Falls are two cool places to visit. 

Tucked away in the southeastern woods of Prince Edward County, Jackson Falls is a seasonal waterfall that flows best in early spring, when melting snow and rainwater surge through the limestone creek beds.

The falls are fed by surface runoff and small tributaries that weave through the elevated woodlands above the hamlet of Milford, cascading down rocky outcrops in a scenic, tranquil setting. 

Far less known and wonderfully off the beaten path, Cape Vesey Falls offers a rugged and raw glimpse into Prince Edward County’s wilder side. Perched near the southern edge of the island, these falls tumble over ancient limestone shelves just before reaching the Lake Ontario shoreline.

12. Visit The Many Museums in PEC

Besides some of the great restaurants in Prince Edward County, one of the best things to do is to visit one of the many museums in Prince Edward County.

In Picton, Macaulay Heritage Park (23 Church St.) includes the 1830s Macaulay House, an old church museum focused on early Scottish settlers and Indigenous history, set amid scenic trails and heritage gardens

Nearby, Wellington Heritage Museum (290 Main St.) resides in a former 1885 Quaker meeting house, featuring artifacts on the local Quaker and canning industries, with a lovely heritage garden behind.

In Waupoos, the Rose House Museum (3333 County Rd 8) is a modest 19th-century Loyalist farmhouse furnished with period pieces and storytelling of rural family life.

Ameliasburgh Heritage Village (517 County Rd 19) is a living history village on 25 acres, boasting 18+ restored buildings like a one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, log cabin, and seasonal craft demos.

The summer months, by far, are the best times to find fun things to do and discover the best the County has to offer. Typically, from June to September, are ideal for beach activities at Sandbanks or North Beach Provincial Park, as well as enjoying a glass of wine on an outdoor patio with wood-fired pizza. 

Most places open for the Victoria Day weekend in the County. 

You can come to “Maple in the County” in the spring, and one of the best places would be Walt’s Sugar Shack.

For those interested in a wine tour or exploring the farm-to-table culinary scene like Counylicious, without the peak crowds, late spring or early fall offer pleasant weather and vibrant scenery, ensuring a more relaxed getaway.
