My Three Dog Winery Review

Have you ever been to a winery, tasted some wine, and thought to yourself “Wow, that’s the most amazing grape I’ve ever tasted!”? That was my reaction when visiting Three Dog Winery in Prince Edward County.

This hidden gem of a winery is located on a quiet country road just outside of Picton near fish lake Rd. Three Dog is Sophiasburg’s first winery in this area.

We choose this winery because it’s off the beaten path and we can avoid the long weekend traffic of Picton.

The name for this winery was inspired by the three dogs that live on the property and greet you in their tasting room. The owners of this unique winery have handcrafted all the furniture from old wine barrels.

There is also an outdoor seating area for picnics with friends and family. If you can get past the well-behaved dogs, then you will realize that Three Dog is one of the best wineries in Prince Edward County that I have ever visited.

It’s out of the way and therefore not too busy and that’s what we like most about it.

Visiting this winery is like going to a friend’s house for a tasting and a tour.

The owners of this winery are very welcoming, and you will feel right at home.

When visiting, you will notice that the building is very simple with red roofs so it’s easy to find.

It is a small building with a large indoor tasting room that is lined with comfortable furniture.

You will also notice that this winery is not like the others. Most wineries have a tour that is led by someone who explains the entire process from start to finish.

At Three Dog, the tour is done with a chalkboard that helps you understand the process of winemaking.

They have accommodations onsite. You can actually book a room there as well, they are listed as an Airbnb.

You can enjoy this winery all year round with trails for snowshoeing and winter bonfires. The loft has a full kitchen and BBQ you can use.

The price of the wine is probably the cheapest I’ve seen in the county starting at $16 which is surprising. Reasonably priced wine for Prince Edward County.

A Tasting of Wine at Three Dog Winery

While visiting Three Dog, I tried a majority of their red and white wines.

My favorites were the 2020 Gamay and the 2019 Bacchus red wines because they were very smooth and light-tasting.

The other perfect red wine for anyone who is new to drinking wine is the 2019 Dog House Red. This is for anyone who wants something light that won’t overpower the flavors of your meal.

When tasting the 2020 Pinot Grigio white wine, my first reaction was Wow! I love this grape! This grape tastes so fruity and delicious. I would gladly drink this bottle of white wine before dinner.

While tasting both wines, the owners told me a bit of the story behind each grape.

They also answered any questions that I had. I am a big fan of white wine, and I loved the story behind the grape they use at Three Dog.

If you drop in for a tasting ask about it, I’m sure they will be glad to go through the story with you.

Three Dog Winery Wood Fire Pizza

In the outside seating area, they have wood-fired pizza available. The atmosphere is charming outside when you’re dining, and very laid back.

I find that this place offers its wood-fired pizza at a great price and all the wine is very reasonable too.

Activities for Non-Wine Tasting People

If you are not a wine drinker, there are still a lot of things to do at Three Dog Winery. There is an outdoor patio for you to enjoy a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic beverage.

There are also picnic tables for you and your friends to sit down and have a bite to eat. Try the wood fire pizza it was great but they also have other eats as well.

This outdoor area is great for those hot summer days because it is shaded. There are also large dogs and cats that live on the property.

This is a win-win situation because you get to pet the animals while drinking your beverage.

Things to Know Before Going to Three Dog Winery

There are a few things to know before visiting Three Dog Winery. The first thing to know before visiting Three Dog is that dogs are allowed inside the tasting room.

There are beautiful dogs that live and visit the property and they are very friendly. They will greet you and sit beside you while you enjoy a glass of wine.

There are also cats that live on the property that you can pet while you are there.

The second thing to know before visiting Three Dog is to wear appropriate footwear.

This vineyard is outdoors and on a dirt path as they cultivate the weeds away. You may also be walking through vines and flowers although the back area is mainly grass.

So, make sure you wear closed-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty.

During my last visit there I did notice there were signs asking you not to go into the vineyard so dirt may not be an issue anyway.

The Overall Experience at Three Dog Winery

Overall, my experience at Three Dog Winery was and always is amazing each time we go. The owners were very welcoming and answered any questions that I had.

Each time we visited, we were lucky enough to go to the winery on a day when it wasn’t very busy and there is live music.

This winery garden setup is the perfect place to enjoy a good wine on a quiet day.

In fact, every time we have visitors from out of town we include this winery on our wine tour in the county.

There are not many people visiting this winery, so you can enjoy it in peace.
