Driving out of Picton on county road 8 you’ll drive through Waupoos, Ontario, along the shores of Lake Ontario and you’ll find The Cape Vineyards on the left.

As you arrive you’ll notice the small hobby farm with animals to the left, check them out they like company.

We wanted to visit because were told that they are known for their unique and diverse styles, from crisp, refreshing whites to rich, full-bodied reds.

This past summer we checked it out for ourselves and everything from the grapes to the glass and good company made our experience great.

The Wines of The Cape

One of the key grape varietals that the winery specializes in is Pinot Noir, creating a full-bodied red wine that has some rich, complex flavors.

• Chardonnay – Sur lie barrel fermented in new French oak. Rich, balanced with stone fruit flavors, notes of vanilla, and baking spice.
• Sparkling Rose – Delicious sparkling rose in a can.
• Gypsy Lola – Sparkling red wine in a can.
• Pinotage Blush – White raspberry, cherry with some citrus notes
• Cabernet Franc Rose – Juicy red grapefruit and raspberries on the palate with slight sweetness with a lime zest finish.
• Merlot – Aged in French oak. Balanced, dark fruits, plum, with smooth tannins
• Pinot Noir – Notes of cherry, baking spice, and soft tannins.
• Skin Contact Orange Vidal – Fermented on skins. Orange flavors, bright tannins.
• White Cabernet Franc – white cranberry, juicy pink grapefruit, balanced acidity, and beautiful tannins.
• Riesling – Balanced acidity with some sweetness, Lemon curd flavors with a touch of refreshing green apples.
• Sauvignon Blanc – Guava and gooseberries with a touch of residual sweetness, the refreshing acidity balances the fruity flavors.
• Super Moon – Blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Aged in french oak, balanced, rich dark fruits, easy to drink with little residual sweetness.

While visiting The Cape Vineyards our tasting was on the patio and the first thing I noticed was the taste of the winery’s hard work and labor that went into making the wine.

There is a tasting room inside, but we choose to sit outside.
